Meta-analysis

DACH SMB reachability.

What 8 public sources together say.

2026-05-08·8 min read·Free to cite (CC-BY-4.0)

We wanted to know: how reachable are DACH SMBs really, and what do customers expect? Instead of fabricating our own survey, we aggregated 8 public studies, Bitkom, Destatis, KBV, BPtK, ZDH and more. Data basis: the latest available annual reports from these associations and authorities, dated 2024 and 2025. Here's what we learned.

Eight public studies from 2024 and 2025 (Bitkom, Destatis, KBV, BPtK, ZDH, Salesforce, Eurostat, Accenture) document three clear findings in DACH SMBs: first, severe labor shortage leads to significantly missed calls especially in healthcare and trades. Second, 68 percent of DACH consumers expect a response within one hour. Third, fewer than 15 percent of SMBs use AI for customer service.

Methodology

Meta-analysis from 8 public sources (Bitkom, Destatis, KBV, BPtK, ZDH, Salesforce State of the Connected Customer, Eurostat, Accenture) on call volume, missed calls and customer expectations in the DACH mid-market. Data basis: the most recent available annual reports from these associations and authorities, dated 2024 and 2025. We update as soon as newer annual reports are published.

Key findings

of DACH consumers expect response within 1 hour

Why this report

When we talk to DACH SMBs, we hear the same sentence again and again: 'We can't keep up at the phone.' But how big is the problem really? How many calls are lost daily, in which industries, at what cost? We couldn't run our own 500-respondent survey at launch, that would be dishonest. Instead we did what industry analysts regularly do: aggregated 8 public sources. What public data over the last 24 months shows together is surprisingly clear.

Methodology

We used 8 public sources: Bitkom "AI in German companies 2024", Destatis Microcensus 2024, KBV health data, BPtK survey on reachability of psychotherapy practices, ZDH economic report 2025 (skilled-labor data), Salesforce "State of the Connected Customer" 2024 (DACH subset), Eurostat ICT survey 2024, Accenture Tech Vision 2024 (DACH chapter). From each source we extracted the data points relevant to SMB reachability and checked for consistency. Where sources disagree, we document this transparently. What we didn't do: synthesize our own surveys or invent data points.

Status of the data basis

The most recent report integrated into this analysis is the ZDH economic report 2025. Seven other sources are 2024 reports, which as of July 2026 are the latest available annual reports of the respective associations and authorities. As soon as Bitkom, KBV, BPtK, Salesforce, Eurostat and Accenture publish their 2025 or 2026 reports, we update the data points here and note the change in the last-updated field. We do not interpolate values between report cycles.

Finding 1: Customer expectations are clear, and systematically missed in DACH SMBs

68 %

expect response within 1 hour

41 %

expect response within 5 minutes

33 %

switch providers after 1 bad experience

Salesforce surveyed consumers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the "State of the Connected Customer 2024" (DACH subset) on service expectations. The result is unambiguous: 68 percent of DACH consumers expect a response to service inquiries within one hour, 41 percent even within 5 minutes. At the same time, one third say they switch providers after a single bad service experience. What this means for SMBs we see in the next two findings.

Finding 2: Labor shortage hits service industries especially hard

The ZDH economic report 2025 continues to document skilled-labor shortage as the central growth brake in German trades, with persistently high bottleneck values compared to the 2024 report. KBV health data shows similar patterns in healthcare, patients regularly report that practice phones are unreachable. The Federal Chamber of Psychotherapists (BPtK) explicitly surveyed reachability of psychotherapy practices in 2024: average waiting time for an appointment 5-7 months, many practices route to voicemail or refer to the regional Statutory Health Insurance Physicians' Association because their own phone volume isn't manageable. Service industries with high phone volume plus skilled labor shortage, trades, healthcare, tax advisory, auto workshops, systematically lose calls that can't be answered.

Finding 3: AI deployment for customer service is below 15 percent in DACH SMBs (2024 data basis)

The Bitkom study "AI in German companies 2024" shows: although 27 percent of all German companies deploy AI in some form (marketing texts, data analysis, programming), AI deployment specifically for customer-service automation (phone, chat, email) is below 15 percent. For SMBs with fewer than 50 employees, the share is even lower (below 10 percent). The Eurostat ICT survey 2024 confirms this at the EU level: only 8 percent of SMBs with 10-49 employees use AI applications for customer interaction. Both values are the latest available numbers from the 2024 surveys. We expect higher adoption in the 2025 and 2026 reports, but as of the 2024 data basis, anyone introducing customer-service AI today is still early.

Finding 4: Manual scheduling costs service industries 8 hours per week

Accenture, in the Tech Vision 2024 Report (DACH chapter), quantifies the manual appointment-scheduling effort in service industries at up to 8 hours per week, affecting medical practices, law firms, tax advisors and trade businesses. On a 40-hour week that's up to 20 percent of an employee's available time, just for scheduling appointments, not running them. Online booking systems (Calendly, Cal.com, Microsoft Bookings) help where customers book online. But 50-70 percent of appointment requests still come by phone, and aren't covered by online booking systems.

What this data says together

Three clear patterns. First: customer expectations are high and rising, 68 percent expect response within one hour, 41 percent within 5 minutes. Whoever doesn't deliver loses customers, one third switches after a bad experience. Second: service industries with high phone volume plus labor shortage (healthcare, trades, tax advisory) systematically lose calls because they can't take all of them. Third: AI deployment for customer service is below 15 percent in DACH SMBs by the 2024 data basis. Early-mover advantage is real, even though the 2025 and 2026 reports will likely show higher adoption. Whoever introduces AI for phone, chat or email service today takes the step ahead of the majority of DACH competitors.

What we'll do next

This meta-analysis is our starting shot. From Q3 2026 we'll launch our own original surveys via SurveyMonkey panel, planned are 500 respondents per quarter from DACH SMBs, theme rotation: Q3 AI adoption in trades, Q4 Voice vs Chat vs Email preferences, Q1 2027 Lost-call revenue benchmark. Studies will remain free to cite, with methodology block and raw data appendix. If you run an SMB and want to participate in an upcoming survey: contact us via the contact form.
